Fall 2023 Lighting I: Lesson One: Inverse Square Law:
Using 3 identical 4x5" grey cards, set 1 foot apart and slightly overlapping, make four photos of the cards with light source 2 ft, 4 ft, 8 ft, and 16 ft from the middle card.
Cards panel surfaces need to be angled to avoid specular highlights/reflections from the light source.
Use an incident light meter on the middle card for exposure reference. Middle card in all four shots should have same RGB value, ideally 50% in Lr or around 128 (127.5 rounded) in Ps 8-bit scale sRGB colorspace/profile.
Crop and combine all four photos together in one image like the one below. Show the light-to-middle-card distance, camera exposure values, Lr/Ps exposure adjustments, below each photo.
